Have you ever listened to a piece of music and felt a sudden chill, or wondered how a simple melody can tell such a massive story? We all know that music moves us, but did you know there is a whole other world of “hidden magic” happening behind the curtains?
This class is an invitation to go behind those curtains. We’re stripping away the textbook jargon and complicated theories. Instead, we are focusing on the “Wow!” moments that change how you hear your favorite music.
In the first half of the semester, we’ll build your confidence with the building blocks of music. We’ll tackle how to read the written musical language that composers use to communicate with musicians, how to spot the difference between emotions such as “happy” (‘major’) and “sad” (‘minor’), and how music creates tension and release that makes you nervous or relaxed.
In the second half, we’ll put our newly learned tools to work by visiting the greats. We’ll spend time with famous composers from centuries past to your beloved pop stars—not as dusty historical figures, but as real people who had bills to pay, bosses to please, and revolutionary ideas to share. You’ll learn how they wove different aspects of music together like a complex conversation and how the world they lived in shaped the sounds we love today.
This class isn’t about memorizing rules; it’s about deepening your connection to the music you already love. Whether you’re a total beginner or a lifelong player, come join the conversation. No experience required—just bring your curiosity!
