Beginning Strings I
Saturdays, 9:30 – 10:15

Beginning Strings II
Time TBD

Introduce your child to the magic of string instruments in this engaging introductory class! Designed for ages 4–7, Beginning Strings offers a survey of the strings family while building a strong foundation in violin technique, music fundamentals, and preparation for private instruction.

Instructor(s): Kavita Shankar
Ages: 4-7

What to Expect

  • Start Playing Right Away: From the very first class, students will create, read, and perform music.
  • Hands-On Learning: Students will master the basics of violin technique, including posture, rhythm, and ear training. Those in Beginning Strings 2 will progress to visually identifying notes and playing more complex melodies.
  • Start With a Solid Foundation: The class will begin with learning how to hold the violin and bow properly, and soon after, students will start learning their first songs while maintaining good posture and technique.
  • General Music Learning: Students will train to recognize and play rhythms and basic melodies. They’ll learn about the string family, famous composers, and begin identifying music notes.
  • Practice at Home: Students should take their instruments home for extra practice. The more they practice, the more confident they’ll become as budding musicians!
  • Exciting Finale: Students will showcase their favorite music in a Culminating Event, with additional performance opportunities available at CMCB.

This small group class focuses on forming a solid foundation for violinists while preparing students for private lessons, elementary group classes, and ensembles. Classes are limited to 5 students to ensure individualized attention.

Materials: Students must have at least one instrument at home or rent through CMCB or a third party (e.g., Johnson String). Survey instruments (violins and cellos) will be assigned based on inventory and enrollment. For instrument rental questions, contact us Hannah Elizabeth at hetobias@cmcb.org.

For eligibility questions, contact Jared Field at jfield@cmcb.org. For questions about your child’s musical pathway, email us at registration@cmcb.org.
