For more than two years, we have been working toward the ambitious goal of owning a permanent home in the heart of Boston. With the incredible support and collaboration of our community, our committed students, parents, and faculty, and generous donors, we are thrilled to share that dream is a reality.
We have purchased a 13,000-square-foot building at 2164 Washington Street in Nubian Square, the heart of Roxbury’s Cultural District. The Community Music Center of Boston’s expansion to Roxbury furthers our mission of providing equitable access to excellent music education and arts experiences.
Our Nubian Square location will have:
- Beautiful performance spaces
- Improved accessibility for all
- Updated classrooms
- Excellent acoustics and soundproofing
- More common spaces where we can gather and convene
- Easy access to parking
TWO LOCATIONS
Even after the building opens we will continue to maintain classrooms and teaching spaces in the South End, in our existing location. Our roots in the South End are deep and will continue into the future.
Our exceptional teachers and our learner-centered curriculum will be offered at our South End and Nubian Square locations, as well as at schools and nonprofit partners throughout the city.
TIMELINE
We plan to open our doors by 2026, and Summer/Fall 2026 is the first semester in which we are planning for programming to be offered at our Nubian location.
Registration will continue as usual for the coming years, and by Summer 2026, families will have the option to register at either campus.
ROXBURY & NUBIAN SQUARE
CMCB is a leading arts institution living its mission through an expansion to Roxbury. In addition to maintaining our relationships in the South End, we know our expansion will be most successful by deepening relationships with community members in Roxbury and relying on their input. We look forward to doing so.
Though this building is new to us, Roxbury is not: Our expansion anchors our work in a neighborhood where we have long-standing partnerships. Students in Roxbury are already familiar with CMCB through our work with the Boston Public Schools and community organizations such as the Center for Teen Empowerment or the Record Co. As the largest outside provider of arts education to BPS and an important community partner, CMCB’s expansion to Roxbury will create more opportunities to connect with students and families. We are honored to join arts and culture centers, community agencies, restaurants, shops, and other new projects underway in Nubian Square.
Community Music Center of Boston is proud to be a place where anyone can explore music. And, in addition to our music lessons and programming, CMCB offers great jobs for young people starting at $18/hour. Learn more about the team behind this important work.
WHAT’S NEXT
There will be many upcoming opportunities to visit the new space and learn more about the project. We look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months.
We understand many people may have questions, and we look forward to working together over the coming 2 years to work on answering them together.
There’s much more to come. For now, we want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for making this dream a reality. Join our newsletter to stay updated on the progress of our expanded location.
