We were fortunate enough to host members of the Sphinx Virtuosi for a day on Wednesday, October 9, 2019. The quartet visited with two 4th grade classes a the Mason School in Roxbury, MA. They played 3 pieces, one of which included some familiar pop songs. Students had a chance to interact with the performers and ask some wonderful and thoughtful questions.
The experience generated a lot of excitement for our students–lots of toe tapping and head nodding! All Mason grade 4 & 5 students will have the opportunity to elect to join a violin class with teaching artist Hannah Lopez starting in December. Our string program at the Mason is expanding from 12 weeks to 20 weeks this year as part of a long-term arts program planning process with the principal, Ms. Lauretta Lewis-Medley, who is extremely enthusiastic about music and the arts. We also provide a general music program for all students in grades K0-5 and a songwriting program for grade 5 students. We have partnered at the Mason for many years and are excited to continue to grow and deepen this program!
Then in the evening, another quartet played for a packed house in Allen Hall.
After the performance, Executive Director Lecolion Washington stepped on stage and joined them for an intimate Q&A session.
