May 20, 2021 @ 6:15 pm - 7:45 pm

Community Conversations is a speaker series seeking to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education.

Celebration vs. Tokenism in the Music: What’s the difference?

Lecolion Washington, Executive Director, Community Music Center of Boston

So many of us are striving for a more inclusive world, and one of the ways that we do this is by working to celebrate the contributions of the diversity of cultures around us. The challenge that many of us have is in understanding and navigating the line between celebration and tokenism as it relates to cultural representation. Join us at CMCB for our next Community Conversation as we define and discuss terms such as “representation,” “tokenism,” and “cultural appropriation.”

This Community Conversation will be held over a live Zoom video conference. Details will be sent to all Eventbrite RSVPs. To join, first download the Zoom app: https://zoom.us/download. Then, click on the link to join this Zoom meeting just before 6pm on 5/20. The link to the Zoom meeting will be sent to all those who RSVP on Eventbrite.

Community Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students, parents and partners to be heard. Join us to learn and share your experiences.

Additional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. This event is free for all to attend; please consider making a donation to CMCB to support this work.
