Championing Students’ Many Musical Pathways

June 6 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

A panel discussion with Executive Director, Lecolion Washington and CMCB faculty.

Championing Students’ Many Musical Pathways

With CMCB Executive Director Lecolion Washington, and CMCB Faculty

We all know someone who loves music but has been pushed away by a school or teacher. As music educators, it is heartbreaking to see. So how do you build a program to ensure that never happens?

As part of our strategic plan, over 2019-2023, teachers, students, board and corporation members, and national experts worked together to support our work toward embracing an enriched definition of musical learning. Part of that process was more deeply understanding what motivates our students and what brings them to music lessons. To celebrate and formalize these many inspirations, we devised a Student Pathways program.

Some students are interested in being Performing Musicians, in winning competitions or being competitive for admission to music conservatory. But many others are Community Musicians who make music for the kinship and camaraderie of working with other people. Some are Citizen Artists, who think about how their music affects the world or their sense of social justice: artistic activists, teachers, music therapists, or liturgical musicians. And many more are Musical Explorers, in an early stage of their journey learning about all the richness that music has to offer, either through learning multiple instruments or in exploring multiple genres.

This panel discussion with faculty, led by Executive Director, Lecolion Washington will reflect on how our students and faculty have grown together throughout the introduction and implementation of our new educational framework.

We hope you will be able to join us for this event!

Community Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students, parents and partners to be heard. Join us to learn and share your experiences.

Additional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. This event is free for all to attend; please consider making a donation to CMCB to support this work.
