SUMMARY:Our Student Pathways in Practice
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion with local leaders in arts organizations on how they embody CMCB’s innovative new Student Pathways program. Click here to register\, in person or virtual!\n\n\nHow does your relationship to music shape the direction of a potential career in the arts? Join us for a conversation featuring representatives from local arts organizations ProjectSTEP\, Zumix\, and Castle of our Skins and learn more about their personal journeys and career experiences that align with each of these musical pathways. \nThis program will be moderated by CMCB staff members\, Rachel Chao and Jared Field. Rachel Chao\, Community Engagement and Clinical Manager at CMCB\, is a music therapist that brings a passion for community organizing\, advocacy through storytelling\, and program creation. Jared Field\, Associate Director of the Community Music School at CMCB\, is a composer\, conductor\, music educator and clarinetist. Jared is coming to CMCB from Worcester Academy\, where he led instrumental ensembles\, choirs\, and chamber groups\, taught music theory and individual lessons\, and designed a music technology course. \nA journey in music can take many different shapes and forms. Some students are interested in being Performing Musicians\, in winning competitions or being competitive for admission to music conservatory. But many others are Community Musicians who make music for the kinship and camaraderie of working with other people. Some are Citizen Musicians\, who think about how their music affects the world or their sense of social justice: artistic activists\, teachers\, music therapists\, or liturgical musicians. And many more are Musical Explorers\, in an early stage of their journey learning about all the richness that music has to offer\, either through learning multiple instruments or in exploring multiple genres. To celebrate and formalize these many inspirations\, we devised a Student Pathways program. CMCB’s four student pathways offer a supportive starting place for conversations with both students and school administrators. While you may have heard CMCB staff and faculty talk about Student Pathways\, join us to hear the following professionals speak on their own experiences\, and how they align with the Program. \nSpeakers: \nJosue Gonzalez\, Executive Director\, ProjectSTEP \nCorey DePina\, Program Director\, Zumix \nDr. Ciyadh Wells\, Executive Director\, Castle of our Skins \nAJ Gaudreau\, Music Therapist\, CMCB \nModerators: Rachel Chao and Jared Field (CMCB) \nWe hope you will be able to join us for this event\, either in-person or through our Zoom broadcast! \n— \nCommunity Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students\, parents and partners to be amplified. Join us to learn and share your experiences. \nAdditional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. SUMMARY:Championing Students' Many Musical Pathways
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion with Executive Director\, Lecolion Washington and CMCB faculty.\n\n\nChampioning Students’ Many Musical Pathways\nWith CMCB Executive Director Lecolion Washington\, and CMCB Faculty\nWe all know someone who loves music but has been pushed away by a school or teacher. As music educators\, it is heartbreaking to see. So how do you build a program to ensure that never happens?  \nAs part of our strategic plan\, over 2019-2023\, teachers\, students\, board and corporation members\, and national experts worked together to support our work toward embracing an enriched definition of musical learning. Part of that process was more deeply understanding what motivates our students and what brings them to music lessons. To celebrate and formalize these many inspirations\, we devised a Student Pathways program. \nSome students are interested in being Performing Musicians\, in winning competitions or being competitive for admission to music conservatory. But many others are Community Musicians who make music for the kinship and camaraderie of working with other people. Some are Citizen Artists\, who think about how their music affects the world or their sense of social justice: artistic activists\, teachers\, music therapists\, or liturgical musicians. And many more are Musical Explorers\, in an early stage of their journey learning about all the richness that music has to offer\, either through learning multiple instruments or in exploring multiple genres. \nThis panel discussion with faculty\, led by Executive Director\, Lecolion Washington will reflect on how our students and faculty have grown together throughout the introduction and implementation of our new educational framework. \nWe hope you will be able to join us for this event! \n— \nCommunity Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students\, parents and partners to be heard. Join us to learn and share your experiences. \nAdditional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. We’re so excited to feature many CMCB Faculty members\, such as Akela Franklin\, Manuel García Baró\, Emiliano López\, and Matt Savage and guest artists from Boston and beyond!\n\n\n \nSchedule\n\n\n4 – 4:30 pm: How Does Your Neighborhood Sound? with María Doreste Velázquez\n\nFor Ages 4-7\n\nCome explore the meaning of community through storytelling\, pictures and songs! Participants will recreate their own neighborhood shapes and lines\, composing small patterns inspired by them.\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n  4 – 4:45 pm: In the Moment: Crafting Soundscapes through Improvisation and Noise with Emiliano López\n\nFor Ages 12+\nThis workshop aims to introduce attendees to a series of alternative strategies for creating music. The focus will be on utilizing common objects as musical instruments or as raw sound material. The workshop is designed to cover two main areas: Techniques for using common objects as          sound sources. Techniques for improvisation and spontaneous composition\, enabling participants to integrate the obtained sounds into a musical context. As a result\, the workshop will involve a hands-on exploration of different objects in a sonic context and their utilization in the creation of a musical piece. The final composition will be recorded using a simple field recorder.” \n \n\n4:40 – 5:10 pm – Jazz Improvisation for Kids with Matt Savage\n\nFor Ages 7-12\n\nThis workshop will explain the basics of jazz improv\, what sets it apart from other 20th/21st century musical styles\, and how “call and response” techniques can be used at all skill levels. There will be jazz solos performed by Matt Savage in class\, in addition to recorded excerpts from some of his favorite songs.”\n\n \n\n4:45 – 5:30 pm –  Beat It! Creating Beats on your Computer (For Free) with Manuel García Baró\nFor Ages 12+\nIn this interactive session\, participants will learn how to create simple beats from start to finish using a laptop and free software. Through the workshop\, Akela aims to empower and challenge people of all ages and musical backgrounds to re-examine their relationships with their own voices\, be open to new possibilities\, and collaborate in the creation of a musical product that  they can all take pride in. \n\n\n6:30 – 7 pm – A Concert with Sarah Bob\n\nAll ages are encouraged to attend!\n\nPianist Sarah Bob\, considered a “trailblazer when it comes to championing the works of modern composers and combining art media in the process…\,” is the Founding Artistic Director of the New Gallery Concert Series. She is devoted to commissioning and uniting all types of new music and contemporary visual art with their creators\, thus making the New Gallery Concert Series eclectic\, thought provoking\, and fun. From her work as a concert pianist to the creation of “The Nasty Cooperative\,” from giving students private piano lessons (including many years at CMCB!) to teaching graduate study courses as faculty at the Longy School of Music of Bard College\, the goal\, her strong suit\, is to introduce music\, art\, and community in a loving\, inclusive and intoxicating way.\n\nThis interactive concert experience will include a performance of “Never Has Been Yet” by Shaw Pong Liu. For more information on her career\, accolades\, and concert schedule\, please go to www.sarahbob.net.\n\n\n\n7 – 8 pm – Interweaving Traditional and Contemporary Music Styles with Kevin Harris Trio\n\nAll ages are encouraged to attend!\nWhat do jazz and classical music have in common: a few elements or a lot? In this presentation\, Kevin Harris will lead the audience to discover the important and exciting commonalities of European classical music and Pan-African jazz. Understanding this interlacing is key to grow not only a true appreciation for both genres\, but more importantly to further develop one’s own music style. \n \n\nJoin us for this evening of musical demonstration\, improvisation\, and stimulating participation!
