Anything can be music, even the noise around us. In this course, we’ll practice really listening to the sounds we encounter every day: in nature, in the city, at home, or anywhere we go. The goal is to slow down, observe, and start noticing what we usually tune out, and then turn those observations into sound and music.
We’ll begin by paying close attention to the world around us. Maybe it’s the sound of wind rustling through trees, people talking in a café, or water dripping from a faucet. We’ll record, sketch, write about, or describe those moments whatever feels right. From there, we’ll imagine: What could this become? What instrument or object could represent this sound or feeling? Could it be played on piano? Could it be made with kitchenware, water, or even our voices?
Each student will develop their own way of turning these ideas into music, using whatever tools and instruments speak to them, including anything we can access at CMCB. We’ll also try out different ways of notating and sharing those ideas: drawings, stories, audio clips, short videos, or simple instructions for performance.
As we go, we’ll keep track of what moments felt most powerful, when we felt like we really captured the sound or idea we had in mind. And toward the end of the course, we’ll prepare for a small performance to share some of our pieces with others.
This course is about curiosity, play, and connecting what we hear to how we express ourselves. You don’t need any formal training – just open ears, an imagination, and a willingness to explore.
