Anything can be music, even the noise around us. In this course, we’ll practice really listening to the sounds we encounter every day – out in nature, in the city, at home, or anywhere we go. The goal is to slow down, observe, and start noticing what we usually tune out, then transform those observations into sound and music.
As an ensemble, we’ll experiment with improvisation inspired by nature, daily life, artwork, movement, and our own emotions. Students with different instruments and backgrounds will collaborate to blend their ideas, layering sounds and responding to one another in real time. We’ll explore how individual moments and inspirations can grow into a collective musical experience.
Each student will develop their own approach to turning these observations into music, using whatever tools and instruments speak to them. We’ll also explore creative ways of notating and sharing ideas: drawings, stories, audio clips, short videos, gestures, or simple performance instructions.
Throughout the course, we’ll reflect on which moments felt most powerful – when we felt we truly captured a sound, image, or feeling we had in mind. During the class, we’ll prepare a small informal performance or sharing session to present some of our ensemble pieces and improvisations.
This course is about curiosity, play, and creating connections – between what we hear, what we feel, and how we express ourselves together. No formal training is required. All you need is open ears, an imagination, and a willingness to explore and collaborate!
