SUMMARY:Our Student Pathways in Practice
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion with local leaders in arts organizations on how they embody CMCB’s innovative new Student Pathways program. Click here to register\, in person or virtual!\n\n\nHow does your relationship to music shape the direction of a potential career in the arts? Join us for a conversation featuring representatives from local arts organizations ProjectSTEP\, Zumix\, and Castle of our Skins and learn more about their personal journeys and career experiences that align with each of these musical pathways. \nThis program will be moderated by CMCB staff members\, Rachel Chao and Jared Field. Rachel Chao\, Community Engagement and Clinical Manager at CMCB\, is a music therapist that brings a passion for community organizing\, advocacy through storytelling\, and program creation. Jared Field\, Associate Director of the Community Music School at CMCB\, is a composer\, conductor\, music educator and clarinetist. Jared is coming to CMCB from Worcester Academy\, where he led instrumental ensembles\, choirs\, and chamber groups\, taught music theory and individual lessons\, and designed a music technology course. \nA journey in music can take many different shapes and forms. Some students are interested in being Performing Musicians\, in winning competitions or being competitive for admission to music conservatory. But many others are Community Musicians who make music for the kinship and camaraderie of working with other people. Some are Citizen Musicians\, who think about how their music affects the world or their sense of social justice: artistic activists\, teachers\, music therapists\, or liturgical musicians. And many more are Musical Explorers\, in an early stage of their journey learning about all the richness that music has to offer\, either through learning multiple instruments or in exploring multiple genres. To celebrate and formalize these many inspirations\, we devised a Student Pathways program. CMCB’s four student pathways offer a supportive starting place for conversations with both students and school administrators. While you may have heard CMCB staff and faculty talk about Student Pathways\, join us to hear the following professionals speak on their own experiences\, and how they align with the Program. \nSpeakers: \nJosue Gonzalez\, Executive Director\, ProjectSTEP \nCorey DePina\, Program Director\, Zumix \nDr. Ciyadh Wells\, Executive Director\, Castle of our Skins \nAJ Gaudreau\, Music Therapist\, CMCB \nModerators: Rachel Chao and Jared Field (CMCB) \nWe hope you will be able to join us for this event\, either in-person or through our Zoom broadcast! \n— \nCommunity Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students\, parents and partners to be amplified. Join us to learn and share your experiences. \nAdditional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. SUMMARY:Championing Students' Many Musical Pathways
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion with Executive Director\, Lecolion Washington and CMCB faculty.\n\n\nChampioning Students’ Many Musical Pathways\nWith CMCB Executive Director Lecolion Washington\, and CMCB Faculty\nWe all know someone who loves music but has been pushed away by a school or teacher. As music educators\, it is heartbreaking to see. So how do you build a program to ensure that never happens?  \nAs part of our strategic plan\, over 2019-2023\, teachers\, students\, board and corporation members\, and national experts worked together to support our work toward embracing an enriched definition of musical learning. Part of that process was more deeply understanding what motivates our students and what brings them to music lessons. To celebrate and formalize these many inspirations\, we devised a Student Pathways program. \nSome students are interested in being Performing Musicians\, in winning competitions or being competitive for admission to music conservatory. But many others are Community Musicians who make music for the kinship and camaraderie of working with other people. Some are Citizen Artists\, who think about how their music affects the world or their sense of social justice: artistic activists\, teachers\, music therapists\, or liturgical musicians. And many more are Musical Explorers\, in an early stage of their journey learning about all the richness that music has to offer\, either through learning multiple instruments or in exploring multiple genres. \nThis panel discussion with faculty\, led by Executive Director\, Lecolion Washington will reflect on how our students and faculty have grown together throughout the introduction and implementation of our new educational framework. \nWe hope you will be able to join us for this event! \n— \nCommunity Conversations is a series of workshops with CMCB staff that seeks to engage others in dialogue about important issues in arts education. We want the voices of our students\, parents and partners to be heard. Join us to learn and share your experiences. \nAdditional information about registration and other events can be found at www.cmcb.org. This event is free for all to attend; please consider making a donation to CMCB to support this work.

SUMMARY:Chase Elodia's Perennials - A John Kleshinski Concert
DESCRIPTION:An exciting concert with Brooklyn-based ensemble\, “Perennials” featuring Chase Elodia\, Claire Dickson\, Yvonne Rogers\, and Paul Pandit!\n\n\nChase Elodia’s Perennials\n  \nChase Elodia and his group “Perennials” will be playing music from their new album\, Have\, Know\, Want\, which releases on May 10 on Biophilia Records. Elodia’s circle of influences includes poets June Jordan and Victoria Chang\, composers Joni Mitchell and Maurice Ravel\, and drummers Billy Hart and Terri Lyne Carrington. \nHave\, Know\, Want explores the psychosocial concept of “Ambiguous Loss” through a multilayered narrative throughout its eight tracks. Penned by social scientist Pauline Boss\,”ambiguous loss” refers to that particular\, ongoing mode of grief that emerges without a clear beginning or ending point. Far from easily passing through the traditional “five stages of grief\,” those gripped by ambiguous loss live their lives perpetually in the shadow of a grief that is both omnipresent but difficult to articulate and define\, taking on a phantom-like quality. This idea materializes in songs such as “Tense\,” which explores the language and textuality of passing on; “Drift\,” written from the perspective of a 95-year-old with dementia\, and his alternating moments of lucidity and disorientation; and “Hold\,” told from the viewpoint of a search engine\, which considers what it means to deposit and archive a sense of self in digital space. The ephemerality of pleasure and the certainty of grief remain at the thematic center throughout the music\, as Elodia considers what it means to strive and yearn in lives that seem to be constituted by dissatisfaction and decay. \n  \nPerformers:\nClaire Dickson\, Voice \nYvonne Rogers\, Piano \nPaul Pandit\, Bass \nChase Elodia\, Drums \n  \nAbout the Ensemble:\nChase Elodia’s Perennials is a Brooklyn-based ensemble. Their 2022 Biophilia Records release\, Portrait Imperfect\, was named one of the Best New Albums of 2022 by Downbeat Magazine\, who awarded it 4.5 stars and hailed it as “artful” and “ambitious.” Founded in 2020\, the band combines a collaborative and improvisational sensibility with an aesthetic orientation that has been nourished by singer-songwriters and electronic artists like Meshell Ndegeocello\, Norma Winstone\, and Becca Stevens. The group frequently tours across the US and abroad; in the past few years\, they have performed at the San Teodoro Jazz Festival (Sardinia\, Italy)\, DC Jazz Festival\, Bird’s Eye (Basel\, Switzerland)\, Lakehouse Jazz (San Francisco)\, The Muse (Boulder\, CO)\, Rudy’s Jazz Room (Nashville\, TN)\, Fulton St. Collective (Chicago\, IL) and Rockwood Music Hall (New York\, NY). The band was featured at the 2023 Winter Jazz Festival\, has received accolades from the Café Royale Cultural Foundation and South Arts\, and is set to release their next album in Spring 2024. \n  \nProgram:\nSwept\, Scatter\, Stray \nHold \nEmpty \nDrift \nKnow\, Wonder \nTense \nIt’s OK to Feel OK \nCartwheels on a Tightrope \nHave\, Know\, Want \nWatching You Watch Me \n  \nAccessibility: \nPlease visit our website to find out more about CMCB’s Accessibility Guidelines. \nLocation: \nThis event will occur at CMCB’s Allen Hall and be streamed online. SUMMARY:The Women of Tin Pan Alley
DESCRIPTION:Discover The Women of Tin Pan Alley in our March concert featuring CMCB faculty Akela Franklin and Katie O’Reilly\, and special guests!\n\n\nTHE WOMEN OF TIN PAN ALLEY\n  \nDiscover The Women of Tin Pan Alley\nTin Pan Alley produced many well-known songwriters and publishers such as George Gershwin\, Irving Berlin\, Scott Joplin\, and Cole Porter. But have you heard the music of their lesser-known women colleagues? \nIn the spirit of uplifting historically silenced and forgotten voices\, our March John Kleshinski Concert will feature works for voice and piano that showcase the songwriting talents of Kay Swift\, Dorothy Fields\, Ann Ronell\, Dana Seusse\, Bernice Petkere\, and more. This event will be presented in conjunction with West End Lyric\, featuring CMCB faculty members\, Akela Franklin and Katie O’Reilly\, guests artists from the West End Lyric\, and CMCB’s own students. Join us in celebrating all these incredible women this March! \n  \nWhat is Tin Pan Alley?\nTin Pan Alley was a collection of music publishers and songwriters in the Flower District of Manhattan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
