FAQ

Which class should my child take in the Spring 2021 semester?

Early Childhood classes run through age 7, so if your student is a new 8 or turning 8, you may opt in to Early Childhood sections. Early Childhood classes may have students as young as 4, while Elementary classes may have students as old as 12. What would be best for your 7 or 8 year old’s learning environment? If you have specific questions about what is best for your child, reach out to your teacher and/or Early Childhood Director Samantha Gambaccini at gambaccini@cmcb.org to discuss details.

My child is turning 7 or 8 years old. Should they be in Early Childhood or Elementary classes?

We suggest starting with an instrument that your child has expressed interest in, or something familiar that will spark interest and promote a love and appreciation for music. If you have thoughts and want to talk through your child’s unique musical journey at CMCB, please contact Early Childhood Director Samantha Gambaccini at gambaccini@cmcb.org to discuss details. We are here to advise!

I’m unsure about online vs. in-person classes for next semester.

CMCB will continue to offer both online and in-person learning for the Spring 2021 semester. Sections are labeled on our registration website under location, stating “CMCB” for in-person or “Online.” Please choose whichever suits the needs of your family. While we are unable to offer hybrid learning at this time, you may start the semester in one section, and you’ll have the opportunity to switch sections through our open enrollment period which ends mid-March. Please follow up with us for teacher-specific questions, or to let us know about your preferences.

I think my child is ready for private lessons.

Great! We have a new Beginning Private Lessons program, offering 30-min 1:1 private lessons to ages 5-8 with early childhood teachers both online and in-person. We recommend talking to us about your child’s experience before registering, especially regarding prior experience and learning styles. Feel free to reach out to us for guidance and information.

What are Materials Kits?

In response to our new educational environments, Community Music Center of Boston is offering exciting Early Childhood Music Materials Kits that will be included in all Early Childhood programming. These kits provide online students with their own materials to use at home during classes, and in-person students with their own classroom materials to avoid sharing and contamination. Each Materials Kit comes in our signature CMCB drawstring bag, and includes necessary and fun music materials that are often used in our Early Childhood programming (egg shakers, rhythm sticks, scarves, and more!). The cost of these Materials Kits are $15 for students in little notes and Music & Movement, and $25 for students in Beginning Instruments and Instrument Exploration. Materials Kits are not currently available for Elementary or Private lesson students.
