Songs Live Inside Me (Early Childhood: Patricia Espinosa) – Recommended for ages 3-7

Explore the young composer inside of you! Using a variety of musical instruments, join Adora on her exploration of feelings through making sounds. This session will use both Spanish and English words to express common emotions, using music and creativity as an outlet for our feelings. Caregivers are encouraged to attend and participate.

10:00AM-11:00AM Chibuzo Music: Breaking Down the Band with Akili+Trio in Allen Hall

Composer/Multi-Instrumentalist Akili Jamal Haynes shares his original compositions which he calls Chibuzo Music and the stories behind them.  Students will have the opportunity to bring their instruments and/or voice to perform with his band as they experiment with musical elements taken directly from his compositions.

11:00AM-12:00PM Music as a Catalyst for Social Change with Xingyu Yao in Allen Hall

Besides entertainment, music has been the crucial media for us to express our unique voices, cultivate unity and promote social change. Let’s feel inspired by artists from a diverse background across the world and broaden your horizons about what music can do.
Age restrictions: above 9 years old

12:00PM-1:00PM Lab Session: Sonic Possibilities with Tina Tallon in Room 13/Computer Lab

Have you ever wanted to write your own song, but didn’t have many instruments available? Together, we’ll learn the basics of recording, editing, and plug-in automation in Garageband to discover ways of creating a vast array of sonic possibilities with only our voices – and maybe a few other objects from around the room.
No prior music or production experience necessary.

12:00PM-1:00PM Character and Theme in Film Music with Aidan Ramsay in Rehearsal Room B

How does film music work? What tools do film composers use to amplify and support a narrative? How do you create mood and character through music? CMCB Theory teacher Aidan Ramsay leads this workshop, using examples from composers such as Kathryn Bostic, Mica Levi, and recent Emmy and Golden Globe winner Hildur Guðnadóttir to illustrate several different approaches to narrative music making. Make sure to bring your instruments—the second half of the workshop is interactive! 

1:00PM-2:00PM  Create With Me with 2nd Dynasty and Chris Perry in Allen Hall

Student Led Presentation: Me and my partner Chris will be giving a class on how to build your creative energy and how to flow.  We will involve the audience in freestyling and word play. At the end of the session, I will choose a participant to have a feature on one of my next songs.

Open to Students Ages 7+

2:00PM-3:00PM  Free Play: Rhythm with Jenny Herzog in Rehearsal Room B

Experiment with the interplay between voice, body, and feet, and see how your body can become a percussive instrument. Break into groups to create polyrhythms, hearing how rhythms can overlap to create new textures, and discover how rhythmic ideas can inform an overall composition.

3:00PM-4:00PM  Student Composition Reading with Boston Saxophone Quartet in Allen Hall

The Boston Saxophone Quartet joins us to read the musical work of four CMCB students.  The student works will be performed, critiqued, and workshopped by the group as a whole for our live audience.

3:00PM-4:00PM Introduction to Improvisation with Forbes Graham in Rehearsal Room B

Learn tips, tricks, and tools for creating music in the moment. Bring your instruments and come have fun!

4:00PM-5:00PM Written & Performed By in Allen Hall

CMCB student composers perform their own works!  This is an incredible opportunity to celebrate and share the wonderful work that our students do to create music of their own.
