Voice Instructor at Boston Latin School

Summary of Position

This position is responsible to the respective Department Chair and Artistic Director. The voice faculty instructor provides quality one-on-one 30-minute, 45-minute, and 60-minute music instruction as well as group instruction to students on one week day (TBD) during after school hours (usually 2:30 – 5 p.m., but may be later depending on studio load).

Status:                       Part-Time – Minimum 2.5 Hours

Reports to:                Artistic Director and Department Chair

Works Closely With:           Artistic Director, BLS Satellite Coordinator, Registrar

Specific Responsibilities

Studio Management and Retention

  • Manage teaching studio and work with Registrar on resolving scheduling conflicts
  • Prepare students for audition, performances and evaluations
  • Hold at least one studio recital during the school year (if studio size is small, combine with another faculty studio)
  • Maintain studio attendance sheets and communicate with registrar about schedule changes
  • Maintain open and regular communication with parents and students to support educational progress
  • Contact students/parents if there are any unexpected absences
  • Visit BLS on an as-needed basis to recruit students and/or conduct master classes and sectionals.

Communication and Participation

  • Attend department meetings and annual all-faculty meeting as scheduled
  • Participate in departmental events, competitions, recitals, and concerts and encourage students to attend
  • Facilitate student participation in the annual Performathon fundraiser
  • Participate in annual department student evaluations
  • Communicate clearly with CMCB Front Office regarding teaching schedule changes
  • Respond to requests from CMCB staff in a timely manner
  • Communicate with Department Chair on curriculum expectations
  • Interface with BLS teachers regarding repertoire and audition needs.
  • Other Duties as assigned by Artistic Director or Department Chair

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music, performance, or related field preferred
  • Strong background in contemporary styles along with classical training
  • Ability to motivate and/or inspire others
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills (engaging and professional)
  • Effectively communicate with others
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen to and learn from others
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) – Ongoing training is provided in this area
