Students from Community Music Center of Boston rehearse with students from the Afghanistan...

Students from Community Music Center of Boston rehearse with students from the Afghanistan Chamber Wind Ensemble.

On Thursday, February 14th, a select group of students from Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB) had the unique opportunity to perform with youth musicians from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM). The young musicians from Afghanistan embarked on a tour that stretched from Washington D.C., to New York and finally to Boston for a 3-day residency visit at New England Conservatory. So how did CMCB get involved? Former CMCB Faculty member, Derek Beckvold, left CMCB last summer and started teaching saxophone and flute at the ANIM in August. He contacted CMCB’s Artistic Director, Will Fickes, about the opportunity for students from across the world to share their love of music in a collaborative concert. Fickes immediately recognized the unique opportunity for both organizations and in just a few short weeks prepared nine CMCB students to perform traditional Afghani music with students from the Afghanistan Chamber Wind Ensemble.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, Beckvold was asked why “a 26-year-old conservatory trained musician from Boxford [would] want to relocate to a war-torn country.” Beckvold responded simply, stating that “he wanted to be a part of history.” He continues “The modern history of Afghanistan is really compelling to me…And before all the fighting there was such a rich, deep culture with art and music. As that reemerges, I wanted to be a part of it.”

Joining the ANIM in this collaborative concert were 9 CMCB students: Rosy Chen (flute), Xingye Wang (oboe), Rebecca Rohrlick (clarinet), Minh Trink (bassoon), Eddie Wang (tenor saxophone), Paul Baronas, (alto saxophone), Paul Mikulskis (French horn), Daniel Cushing (trumpet) and Ashwin Devavaram (trombone). The group performed traditional Afghani tunes along with pieces by Chopin and others.

The Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young Pianists

CMCB Announces The Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young Pianists

“Sandy was an incredibly enthusiastic teacher and cared immensely for the piano. Her vibrancy and vitality within the educational community was exceptional. I am very excited about this fund honoring Sandy and her lifetime passion – that of the gift of music.” - Erin Lindsey, Piano Department Chair

The Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young Pianists is a merit-based opportunity for classically trained
piano students to receive acknowledgment for dedication to their art.

Sandy Englehart (January 29, 1937−January 20, 2012) was a lifelong pianist and a friend
to musicians of all ages. She taught music in the Newton Public Schools and gave private
instruction in her home for more than four decades, mostly for students
through the age of eighteen but for adults as well. Throughout her teaching career, Sandy’s
students performed twice a year in recitals she arranged for them. She was beloved for her
dedication to her students and to the classical repertoire she so devotedly shared with them.

The encouragement that the Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young Pianists provides is in
accordance with the values of the Community Music Center of Boston, in that every person
should have the ability to learn an instrument regardless of financial circumstances. The
Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young Pianists specifically aids the Music Center in encouraging
demonstratively serious piano students to further their learning and achievement.

To make a donation, please visit our DONATION PAGE, or click HERE.

To each individual who makes a decision to donate to the Sandra Englehart Scholarship for Young
Pianists, we are deeply appreciative.
