9th Annual Young Composers Festival

Welcome to the Ninth Annual Young Composers Festival, a week-long festival of new music by young composers and fun, inspiring workshops for the whole family. Community Music Center of Boston and New Gallery Concert Series are proud to present the annual Young Composers Festival, a week-long program of workshops, panel discussions and concerts by and for students from elementary school to college. Young musicians work alongside professional composers and performers to create, perform and enjoy contemporary music. Opportunities include collaborative workshops, a reading session, visual arts, and improvisation. This year’s Young Composers Festival (YCF) takes place from January 26-28, 2012 at Community Music Center of Boston.

NEW GALLERY CONCERT SERIES CONCERT—DOODLE

Program includes music by Georges Aperghis, R. Murray Schafer and a world premiere by Lior Navok with performances by soprano Jennifer Ashe, harpist Ina Zdorovetchi, violist Mark Berger, pianist Sarah Bob and percussionist Aaron Trant.

COMMUNITY MUSIC CENTER OF BOSTON PIANO DEPARTMENT RECITAL

A Piano Department Recital led by Piano Department Chair Erin Lindsey will feature CMCB students performing their own original compositions.  Reception to follow.

YOUNG COMPOSERS FESTIVAL

 

 

10:30-11:30 a.m.   SONGWRITING BEGINNINGS

Kimberly Khare, Director of the CMCB Music Therapy Department, along with other members of her team, will lead young students through the steps of creating their first original pieces in a fun, creative enviornment.

 

11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.   JAZZ WORKSHOP

Ever wonder how jazz bands create music when most of it is based on inprovisation? Mike Giordano and Derek Beckvold of the CMCB faculty will show how jazz bands put together pieces based on simple jazz charts, created by CMCB students.

 

12:30-1p.m.   BREAK

 

1-2 p.m.   NEW SOUNDS WORKSHOP FEATURING DJ MIKE AND SPOGGA

Back by popular demand from last year, DJ Mike Hoska will give an interactive demonstration and talk on beatboxing. Internationally acclaimed live music artist Spogga—a singer-songwriter, guitarist and fire dancer—will amaze you with his beatbox looping, live vocal remixing with DJ scracthing sound effects, power soulful vocals and guitar riffs.

 

2-3 p.m. SPECIAL GUEST: ERAN EGOZY

Special Guest Eran Egozy, creator of Guitar Hero, talks about his transition from classical musician to software developer.

 

3-3:30 p.m. BEATSHOP DEMONSTRATION

Ko Wong-Horiuchi, the developer of the most exciting new programs at CMCB, will demonstrate incredible software he uses in the Beatshop Workshop.

 

3:30-4:15 p.m.  IMPROV WORKSHOP

Aaron Trant, deemed as both an “engaging” composer as well as a ”sure, adept, and nuanced” percussionist by The Boston Music Intelligencer, is an active musician in the Boston area and beyond. He will lead you in a fun and inventive improv workshop. Bring an instrument and join in!

 

4:30-5:30 p.m.   READING SESSION

Premieres of works by Boston composition students will be read by members of the CMCB Faculty. This annual event, which provides valuable feedback for budding composers, will be led by Longy School of Music Composition Professor John Morrison.

 

6-7 p.m. WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY…

Talented young students will perform original rock, pop, classical and jazz pieces in this inspiring, fun and eclectic concert which is the culmination of the Ninth Annual Young Composers Festival.

 

7 p.m.   FESTIVAL RECEPTION!

Meet our Registrar, Andy Mahoney! Andy has been Registrar at CMCB since 2007. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Andy doesn’t only enjoy working with the numbers, but loves the parents and students he gets to know at CMCB.   Andy went to Ithaca College, a favorite choice for aspiring musicians, and enjoys all types of music but mostly jazz.  You can find Andy in the front office, ready to answer all of your registration questions and sign you up for your next lesson!

French Music/Lecture Series Part II

Join us this Thursday, for a concert in our popular Wine and Music Series. “La musique et le vin” will take you on a journey through the rustic hills of France as we fill our hall with French Art songs and fill our glasses with samplings of French vin! We are thrilled to welcome back Jo-Ann Ross, certified specialist of wine, to engage us in a lecture of the rich history of the French vineyards.

Meet our Voice and Theory Instructor, EVA KENDRICK

Voice, Theory, A Capella Chorus, and Young Composers Festival

Bio:

Ms. Kendrick is a versatile composer and vocalist. She has written operas, song cycles, a musical, chamber works, choral works, and music for film. Recent venues include the Longy SeptemberFEST concert series, the Ebell of Los Angeles, and Boston’s Birth of a Musical Festival. She has received a Subito grant from the American Composers Forum, ASCAPLU$ Awards, and several awards from the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Ms. Kendrick is the OPERAtunity outreach program instructor with Opera Providence, the Senior Voice Teacher at the SMARTS Summer Institute, and the music director at First Parish Medfield.
